The 8860 FIA homologation is a higher safety rating which requires the helmet to pass a more difficult series of tests. Some series such Formula One and WRC require this homologation. Sparco is just one of a few who are able to produce a helmet to pass this strict testing.

Sparco spent long hours using wind tunnel testing to design and shape the new WTX range. The WTX helmet design features a low wind resistance which reduces neck strain for the driver. The wind tunnel testing also found ways to increase air circulation which reduces temperatures inside the helmet. The carbon fiber shell is produced in an autoclave which gives the helmet a superior strength to weight ratio. The WTX range was also developed using professional drivers like Miki Biasion, Paolo Andreucci and many others to test and give real world feedback.

The WTX-9 and WTX-9j also feature a new generation intercom system. As with all of the helmets in the WTX range, the liners are completely removable and washable. There is also an optional customization kit which offers different padding with varying thickness to give you a perfect fit. The closed face WTX helmets are available in wide or standard eye port.

Why the name WTX?

WT stand for Wind Tunnel, where our testers test the new helmets. In the tunnel we study the shape with a view to making the helmets more stable. It’s an incredibly important element: when they’re in a turbulent airflow, drivers have to dedicate part of their concentration to keeping their heads straight, so a helmet that saves them this effort is a great help in any race.

What are the three new features of the new helmets?
1) The weight. We’ve called one of the new models the WTX-7-Air because it’s as light as air. It’s a helmet made entirely of carbon fibre, so extremely light. We’ve made huge leaps forward in this field and we’re all really proud of the result: a helmet that weighs next to nothing and that makes our drivers safer and more competitive. Safer in case of a crash because it’s lighter, and more competitive because being lighter helps them shaves that little bit extra off lap times.

2) The ventilation system. For drivers, the environment inside a helmet isn’t one of the friendliest. To give you an idea, just imagine sticking your head in a 60°C oven. To get round this problem we’ve developed and wind tunnel tested the FAD system (forced Air Duct), that gives the helmet perfect air circulation and stops the visor from steaming up. They’ve got a dual air intake system: two at the rear to extract heat and two at the front that force fresh air in. We’ve fitted the WTXJ-7-Air with this system, making it the only jet helmet in the world with a forced air ventilation system.

3) Function. The WTX range is developed to meet every driver’s needs. The design is modular, so that you can add all kinds of interchangeable accessories according to what you’re doing with the helmet. Like the EDS (Easy Drink System) for example, a “case” to fit to the helmet that lets drivers drink effortlessly. It’s a very important feature especially in endurance races, but still very useful in all kinds of other competitions. Or the FCR (Fast Connection Radio) system: we’ve fitted all our helmets with a microphone kit and all the necessary attachments, so there’s no need to drill holes in them anymore. Then there’s the composite helmet, with every part you can remove for washing.

So, comfort and safety?
Exactly. We’ve strived to combine these two basic ingredients in our work. We’ve even included different shell shapes in the project

A SURE GRIP : Arrow gloves by Sparco

A SURE GRIP

Just before a race starts, a driver grips the steering wheel.
How do you describe that feeling?
You grip the wheel so that the car knows who’s in command. And from that moment on your grip has to stay sure and resolute for the entire duration of the race.
A few days ago I tried out a pair of Arrow gloves. They weigh just 42 grams. The new thing about them is called HTX, a natural high-grip resin, injected hot into the fibres of the fabric. It’s a Sparco exclusive patent. The result is a glove that resists both abrasion and tearing, that

Something I’ve always liked doing is taking a trip round the stores, looking at the suits, the helmets, the seats I’ll be seeing at the Grand Prix, on the kart tracks and in the cars of the most creative tuners. Some of the stuff hasn’t even been released onto the market, but it’s all down there waiting to be shipped all over the world.
Right now we’ve got the ERGO seatssitting in stores, ready for delivery around March 2011 but already available for pre-order.
The features I like best about ERGO is that it helps drivers to save their energy. Once they’re in the safety cell all they have to do is concentrate on driving.
The seat was designed on CAD system with the help of sized dummies to perfect the containment capacity. The seat’s non-slip kinderpoint lining and the special shoulder zone are designed limit body movement even more, just like the DTC head retainer system.
And naturally not to mention comfort: ERGO has an anatomical seat cushion and a backrest in high-breathability material.
ERGO comes in three sizes (S, M, L) to meet all your needs.
